Q23508 - PRB: OfficeMate/ExamWRITER is Slow on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

If you are using OfficeMate/ExamWRITER on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 and the program is operating very slowly, disable all firewalls and anti-virus software on your server and workstation. If, after disabling the firewalls, the OfficeMate Suite is still operating very slowly, contact your network technician and request that he or she configure the firewalls to allow OfficeMate/ExamWRITER and SQL Server to function without restriction. If disabling the firewalls and anti-virus software resolves the issue, turn the firewalls back on, add the necessary ports to the policy (see SQL server port information below*), and exclude contain folders and areas from anti-virus checks (for example, the SQL database).

Some clients have resolved speed issues in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 by turning off LLMNR (Link-Local Multicast Name Resolution); ask your network technician to help you disable this feature if you continue to experience speed issues. For more information on LLMNR, go to www.microsoft.com.

*Follow the instructions below to determine which port may be blocking OfficeMate/ExamWRITER:

  1. Exit OfficeMate and ExamWRITER.
  2. Open the workstation's Command Prompt window.
  3. Type netstat -an | find "<server IP address>". (For example, if you type "netstat -an | find "192.168.1.100"," a list of currently open ports will be displayed. The port is the number after the server's IP address (i.e., port 61082 will be displayed as 192.168.1.100:61082).)
  4. Capture a screenshot of the Command Prompt window to compare the data that you are viewing.
  5. Open OfficeMate or ExamWRITER.
  6. Open the workstation's Command Prompt window.
  7. Type netstat -an | find "<server IP address>" again.
  8. Capture a screenshot of the Command Prompt window to compare the data that you are viewing.
  9. Compare the data in the two screenshots that you captured. If ports appear in the Command Prompt window when OfficeMate and ExamWRITER are open, but don't appear in the Command Prompt window when OfficeMate or ExamWRITER are closed, then these ports may need to be opened for OfficeMate and ExamWRITER to function. You can open the following SQL Server ports:
    • TCP 1433 "SQLServer"
    • TCP 1434 "SQL Admin Connection"
    • TCP 4022 "SQL Service Broker"
    • TCP 135 "SQL Debugger/RPC"
    • TCP 2383 "Analysis Services"
    • TCP 2382 "SQL Browser"
    • TCP 80 "HTTP"
    • TCP 443 "SSL"
    • UDP 1434 "SQL Browser"
